ABB re-enters power electronics sector with Proteus portfolio after acquiring Gamesa Electric

Type: Acquisition · Technology: Solar · Country: Switzerland · Announced: 2026-06-19

Swiss electrification company ABB re-entered the power electronics sector by launching the Proteus portfolio, a new power conversion system for solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The move follows ABB's acquisition of Gamesa Electric in 2025, which had previously developed the Proteus line of PV and battery inverters. ABB claims the new portfolio includes 4.7MVA central inverters with a conversion efficiency of 99.45%, matching the benchmarks set by Gamesa Electric's existing inverter line. The company has installed over 120GW of power conversion capacity globally to date. ABB plans to present the new Proteus solar inverter at Intersolar Europe 2026 in Munich, Germany, from June 23-25.
