Alpiq signs pre‑connection agreement with Swissgrid for 300 MW battery storage project in Niedergösgen, Switzerland
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Switzerland · Capacity: 300 MW · Announced: 2026-07-01
Alpiq signed a pre‑connection agreement with Swissgrid to secure a 300 MW link to the national transmission network for its Niedergösgen battery energy storage system. The 300 MW / 1.2 GWh BESS will be built adjacent to Alpiq’s Gösgen run‑of‑river hydro plant in Niedergösgen, canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. Construction is slated to start in 2027 with commissioning targeted for 2029, and the storage facility will be capable of supplying electricity to roughly 500,000 households for more than four hours. The agreement strengthens Alpiq’s portfolio, which already includes over 1 GW of battery storage across Europe, and supports its strategy to increase flexibility and renewable integration. By linking directly to a major grid hub, the project enhances system security and positions Alpiq as a leading provider of large‑scale storage in the Swiss market.
