Alstom secures €295m contract to upgrade Lausanne Metro Line M2 with CBTC signalling and fleet refurbishment
Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Transport · Country: Switzerland · Value: EUR 295M · Announced: 2026-05-05
Alstom signed a €295 million contract with Region Public Transport (TL) to supply a new Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system for Lausanne’s fully automated Metro Line M2, alongside a mid-life refurbishment of the existing M2 fleet. The Urbalis Fluence CBTC system will reduce headways and increase capacity to meet rising passenger demand, leveraging a train-centric architecture that minimizes additional trackside equipment while integrating with existing assets. The fleet refurbishment will take place at Alstom’s plant in Villeneuve, Switzerland, and include interior upgrades and renewal of onboard equipment such as the Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS), which will be fully integrated with the new CBTC signalling. Work on the CBTC installation and testing will primarily occur overnight to minimize service disruption, ensuring continuous operation of the 5.9km line serving 14 stations between Ouchy and Croisettes. The project extends Alstom’s original 2008 contract, which included the supply of the signalling system and 18 two-car trains that carried 36.1 million passengers in 2024.
