Alstom signed contracts worth €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) with U.K. intercity rail provider TransPennine Express for the supply and long-term maintenance of 29 five-car battery-electric multiple units. The agreements combine a rolling stock contract worth approximately €930 million ($1 billion) with maintenance contracts valued at around €230 million ($267 million). The project supports the £11 billion ($13 billion) Transpennine Route Upgrade modernization program covering Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Leeds, Hull, York, Scarborough and Saltburn. Aberdeen Investments' Next Generation Rail Fund and Rock Rail also reached financial close on the transaction, with MetLife Investment Management providing £180 million ($243 million) in long-term fixed-rate notes to Rock Rail TPE PLC and its consortium owners. The 121-meter-long trains will operate at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour and will provide around 300 seats per train, marking the first new-build trains operated by Great British Railways.
