Amazon acquired the 8,000-acre GW Ranch site in Pecos, Texas from Pacifico Energy to develop a behind-the-meter data center powered by a new natural gas plant. The project includes plans for 35 turbines generating up to 7.65GW of power capacity, making it potentially the largest natural gas plant in the US. The site also incorporates 1.8GW of battery storage and 750MW of solar, creating a standalone energy platform to support multi-phase data center deployments. Amazon confirmed the acquisition and intends to purchase generation from the site, following a trend of hyperscalers using natural gas to power large-scale AI data centers. Construction permits for three data center buildings were filed with Texas authorities, indicating immediate development plans.
