Amazon invests in GranBio to develop sustainable aviation fuel
Type: Investment · Technology: Biomass · Country: United States · Announced: 2026-06-29
Amazon announced an investment in GranBio to accelerate the development and commercialization of its technology that converts forestry residues and construction waste into sustainable aviation fuel. GranBio’s process breaks down woody biomass to extract carbon, which is then chemically converted into drop‑in fuels such as renewable diesel, gasoline and SAF, compatible with existing engines and infrastructure. The company plans to expand SAF production capacity over the next decade by repurposing shuttered pulp and paper mills across the United States into advanced biorefineries. The investment supports Amazon’s broader effort to reduce carbon emissions across its global operations, including transportation, buildings and packaging, by securing lower‑carbon aviation fuel. It also offers the potential to revitalize rural communities and improve forest health by turning waste streams into clean energy.
