Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a partnership with Toptana Technologies to develop the Sta'O'Nuk subsea cable system, linking Washington in the US to Japan with 420Tbps capacity across 20 fiber pairs. The project, expected to be operational in 2029, marks the first international subsea cable to land in Washington state in nearly 30 years. Toptana Technologies, owned by the Quinault Indian Nation, is breaking ground on a new cable landing station in Ocean Shores, Washington, designed to accommodate up to four subsea cable systems. The partnership includes Assured Communications serving as the strategic partner, program manager, and operations service provider for the landing station. The Quinault Indian Nation granted AWS permission to use the name 'Sta'O'Nuk,' meaning 'lightning serpent' in the Quinault language, preserving its cultural significance.
