Ampera forms strategic collaboration with Scorpio Tankers Inc to develop and commercialize advanced microreactors for maritime applications
Type: Partnership · Technology: Nuclear · Country: United States · Announced: 2026-07-07
Ampera Inc entered into a strategic collaboration with Monaco-based shipping company Scorpio Tankers Inc in April 2026 to jointly develop and commercialize advanced microreactor systems tailored for marine, shipping, and related maritime applications. The partnership leverages Ampera's 3D-printed, thorium-based microreactor technology, which is designed for factory-built deployment and offers up to 30 MWe of power with a core lifespan of up to 30 years without refueling. Scorpio Tankers Inc, a global leader in maritime transport with a fleet of over 100 vessels, will provide operational expertise and market access to validate the microreactors in real-world shipping environments. The collaboration aims to address the maritime sector's decarbonization goals by offering emission-free, scalable nuclear power solutions for commercial shipping fleets. Ampera's CEO Brian Matthews highlighted the partnership as a critical step toward industrializing factory-built nuclear power for high-demand markets, including defense and industrial sectors.
