AWS signs recycled water supply agreement with Greater Western Water for Melbourne data center

Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Water Waste · Country: Australia · Announced: 2026-06-19

Amazon Web Services (AWS) signed a recycled water supply agreement with Greater Western Water (GWW) to source treated wastewater from the Melton Recycled Water Plant (RWP) at Mt Cottrell for its under-development data center in western Melbourne, Australia. The deal marks the first such agreement in Victoria, aligning with the state government's Industry Water Connection Guide to enhance water security for industrial users. GWW managing director Cameron FitzGerald highlighted the agreement as a milestone in enabling data centers to reduce their environmental footprint through innovative water reuse solutions. AWS head of Infrastructure and Energy Policy, Australia and New Zealand, Matt O'Rourke, emphasized that connecting the data center to recycled water from day one of operations will help preserve millions of liters of drinking water annually for local communities. The agreement supports AWS's global water positivity goal to return more water than it uses by 2030, with the company already operating 26 facilities using 100% reclaimed water globally.
