Axpo secures first virtual PPA with Belgian public sector for wind power

Type: Ppa · Technology: Onshore Wind · Country: Belgium · Announced: 2026-08-28

Swiss energy group Axpo has secured its first virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) with the Belgian public sector, awarded by the Flemish Energy Agency (veb). The ten-year contract, effective January 1, 2027, covers six Flemish public organizations and is expected to involve approximately 45.5 GWh of renewable electricity annually. The electricity will be generated from onshore wind farms located in Belgium, produced through a long-term collaboration between Axpo and Belgian wind energy producer Elicio. This vPPA mechanism allows Axpo to sell electricity on the market while providing the public entities with financial protection against energy cost volatility and price spikes, including negative pricing periods. The agreement aims to offer greater visibility on energy procurement costs over the next decade and demonstrates Axpo's expansion strategy in the Belgian market.
