Real estate firm Behring Cos. acquired the vacant 83,000-square-foot former Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) supercomputing facility at 415 20th Street in Oakland, California, from Hines for $6.8 million in December 2025. The site, originally the Oakland Scientific Facility housing supercomputers like IBM RS/6000 SP and Cray T3E systems, had been vacant since LBNL exited the data center portion around 2015. Behring plans to renovate the facility to create a 20MW data center optimized for dense AI compute, increasing its current 4.5MW capacity. The project, marketed as one of the most capable AI inference compute facilities in the inner Bay Area, offers direct BART access and proximity to San Francisco. Since marketing began, Behring has conducted 15 tours with potential tenants including robotics companies, research labs, AI firms, and cloud providers.
