Type: Financing · Technology: Storage · Country: Spain · Announced: 2026-06-18
Bihar Batteries, a San Sebastián-based developer of sodium-ion battery technology for stationary storage applications, secured €2 million in capital from international investors and obtained €10 million in funding from Spain’s PERTE renewable energy value chain program. The company announced two strategic partnerships: one with Battera and another with NX Technologies, which will supply advanced battery management systems (BMS) featuring pyrotechnic fuses for enhanced safety in its pilot projects. Bihar Batteries also collaborates with CIC energiGUNE, a Basque technology center, to co-develop pouch-type sodium-ion cells optimized for high thermal stability and energy density. The company plans to launch its first pilot projects for both cells and complete storage systems during summer 2026, with commercialization targeted for the second half of the year. Additionally, Bihar Batteries revealed plans to establish a pilot manufacturing line in Gipuzkoa in 2027, aiming to validate industrial processes and lay the groundwork for a future gigafactory dedicated to sodium-ion batteries.
