BP to become operator of Babek gas field in Azerbaijan

BP is set to become the operator of the offshore Babek gas field in Azerbaijan, according to three industry sources. The agreement between BP and Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR is expected to be announced on June 1. The Babek field is estimated to hold approximately 400 billion cubic metres of gas and 80 million tonnes of condensate. This move will see the Babek field transition from being part of a SOCAR-led unit to a separate project operated by BP, further expanding BP's portfolio in the South Caucasus region.
