Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock expands rural financing to include battery energy storage systems under the 2026/2027 Plano Safra program

Type: Financing · Technology: Storage · Country: Brazil · Announced: 2026-07-08

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock announced the 2026/2027 Plano Safra agricultural financing program, expanding rural credit lines to include financing for battery energy storage systems for the first time. The program allocates a record BRL 525.1 billion ($101.5 billion) to the agricultural sector, an increase of BRL 8.9 billion from the previous edition, with credit lines such as Inovagro and Prodecoop now eligible to fund battery storage projects. Industry association Absolar confirmed it had proposed the inclusion of battery storage to the federal government, securing lower average interest rates between 8% and 12.5% under the program, down from 8.5% to 14.5% previously. The financing aims to support renewable energy integration and energy security for rural businesses, particularly farms already deploying 6.3 GW of solar capacity—over 13% of Brazil’s distributed solar generation—across more than 806,700 rural properties. Absolar highlighted that combining solar generation with battery storage can reduce electricity costs, improve reliability, and mitigate tariff volatility for applications including irrigation, refrigeration, livestock production, and property monitoring.
