Brazil's second 2026 LRCAP auction contracts 501 MW of existing thermal power plants

Brazil's second Leilão de Reserva de Capacidade (LRCAP) of 2026, held on March 20, 2026, contracted 501.3 MW of power from existing thermal power plants. The auction, conducted at the headquarters of the Câmara de Comercialização de Energia Elétrica (CCEE) in São Paulo, included four diesel and fuel oil plants with supply starting in 2026 and 2027, and two biodiesel plants starting operations in 2030. The tender was part of a broader effort to secure 23 GW of power capacity, with 19.5 GW already contracted in the first LRCAP held two days prior. Thymos Energia estimated the total demand at 23 GW, leaving a remaining 3 GW for future battery storage auctions.
