BW ESS acquires 250 MW / 1,000 MWh Yanco battery energy storage system in Riverina, NSW from ACEnergy

Type: Acquisition · Technology: Storage · Country: Australia · Capacity: 250 MW · Announced: 2026-08-13

Swiss energy storage owner-operator BW ESS completed the acquisition of the 250 MW / 1,000 MWh Yanco battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Riverina region of New South Wales from Melbourne-headquartered clean energy developer ACEnergy. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026, with the project located approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Narrandera and 560 kilometers southwest of Sydney, adjacent to the EnergyCo South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The BESS will connect to Transgrid’s 132 kV Yanco substation, providing firming capacity, energy arbitrage, and system security services to the National Electricity Market (NEM). Once operational, the project will supply electricity to around 430,000 homes for four hours, enhancing grid reliability in the NEM. BW ESS Executive Director Andy Hadland emphasized the project’s role in Australia’s transition to a more flexible and reliable power system, while ACEnergy Managing Director Raymond Wang highlighted the milestone as a strong endorsement of its development platform.
