BYD to invest up to BRL 500 million ($98 million) in grid-scale battery energy storage system production line in Brazil
Type: Investment · Technology: Storage · Country: Brazil · Value: $98M · Announced: 2026-06-22
Shenzhen-headquartered BYD announced plans to invest up to BRL 500 million ($98 million) in a battery energy storage system (BESS) production line in Brazil, marking a strategic expansion into grid-scale storage manufacturing. The investment will focus on module, pack, and system integration for lithium iron phosphate battery technology, with cells supplied through BYD’s global battery chain. BYD will decide within 90 days whether to expand its existing Manaus battery plant or build a new facility elsewhere in Brazil, with the initial project expected to create 300 to 400 direct jobs. The investment aligns with Brazil’s first federal auction for grid-scale storage scheduled for December 2026, where projects must meet domestic content requirements defined by BNDES to qualify. Brazil’s growing solar and wind deployment has outpaced grid absorption capacity, leading to curtailment during peak production and increasing the need for grid-scale BESS to provide peak shifting, frequency support, and congestion relief.
