CATL secures 60 GWh sodium-ion battery supply agreement with HyperStrong

Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Storage · Country: China · Capacity: 60 GWh · Announced: 2026-04-27

CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, finalized a three-year supply agreement with Chinese system integrator HyperStrong for 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries, marking the largest such order globally to date. The deal signifies CATL's achievement in overcoming mass-production challenges for sodium-ion technology, including hard carbon anode production issues like foaming and moisture control, enabling large-scale delivery capability. The supplied batteries feature a 300 Ah+ format with 160 Wh/kg energy density, 97% system efficiency, and over 15,000 cycles at 80% capacity retention, operating between -40°C and 70°C. Targeting 2-hour to 8-hour utility-scale storage, shared storage, renewable energy hubs, and data center applications, the chemistry uses cobalt-free and nickel-free components with aluminum foil to reduce costs. This agreement follows a prior 200 GWh supply deal announced in November 2025, which may have included this 60 GWh order within its framework.
