CDC announced a partnership with Contact Energy to develop a new data center in Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand. The site will be built on land adjacent to Contact Energy’s former Taranaki Combined Cycle power station and will draw electricity from a long‑term contract backed by Contact Energy’s renewable development pipeline. The facility will feature high‑capacity fiber connectivity, both terrestrial and subsea, and a closed‑loop cooling system that CDC uses in its other sites. The project targets critical and sovereign workloads for government, health, research, banking and emergency communications, aiming to keep sensitive data in‑country. CDC currently operates about 600 MW of data centre capacity and plans to add this new site to its portfolio, leveraging the combination of renewable generation, grid connection and skilled workforce in Stratford. No financial terms were disclosed, and the deal remains at the exploration stage pending due diligence and consenting.
