City of Stockholm signs 15-year carbon removal purchase agreement with Stockholm Exergi for BECCS project
Type: Ppa · Technology: Biomass · Country: Sweden · Announced: 2026-05-27
The City of Stockholm entered a 15-year carbon removal purchase agreement with Stockholm Exergi AB, committing to buy 50,000 tonnes of permanent carbon removals annually starting in 2028. The deal supports Stockholm's goal to become climate positive by 2030 and fossil fuel-free by 2040, addressing hard-to-abate emissions such as those from construction materials and wastewater treatment. Stockholm Exergi, jointly owned by the City of Stockholm and Ankhiale (a consortium of European pension funds), is constructing the Värtan BECCS facility at its bio-cogeneration plant in Stockholm. The facility will capture and store 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology, converting flue gases into liquid CO2 for permanent storage beneath the North Sea floor. Construction began in 2026, with operations expected to commence around 2028. This transaction follows Stockholm Exergi's 2025 agreement with Microsoft for over five million tonnes of carbon removals, positioning the project as a key component of Sweden's carbon removal market development.
