Colombia's Ministry of Mines and Energy awarded contracts for approximately 100 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and 270 MW of new solar photovoltaic capacity during the first day of its long-term clean energy auction. The process assigned hybrid product contracts totaling 390 MWh-day, with electricity deliveries split between 8:00-18:00 (renewable generation) and 18:00-22:00 (battery-shifted solar). This awarded capacity is expected to increase the country's energy storage capacity by approximately 1,000% and serve over 67,000 households during peak demand hours. The closing price for the contracts was 315.87 Colombian pesos (approximately $0.099) per kWh, which is less than 30% of the potential electricity price in the spot market during drought periods. The 15-year contracts will commence supply obligations on January 1, 2030, under a "pay-as-contracted" scheme, with the Bolsa Mercantil de Colombia acting as the auctioneer.
