Comtel partners with Ge-Group-led consortium to develop zero-impact data center powered by 84MW solar plant in Florence, Italy
Type: Partnership · Technology: Data Center · Country: Italy · Announced: 2026-08-13
IT services provider Comtel announced a partnership with a Ge-Group-led consortium to develop a 'zero-impact' data center in Figline Valdarno, southeast of Florence, Italy. The facility will be powered by an 84MW solar plant as part of the H2-Era Green Valley renewable energy complex. Waste heat from the data center's servers will be repurposed to support vertical farming operations within the same complex. The project aims to repurpose a former Bekaert factory site, which closed in 2018, creating new economic opportunities in the region. Comtel, headquartered in Milan, will operate the data center, marking its first direct operation in the facility. The consortium plans to generate green hydrogen from excess solar energy, enhancing the project's sustainability credentials.
