Constellation files license renewal applications to extend operations of Ginna Clean Energy Center and Nine Mile Point Unit 1 nuclear reactors in New York to 2049

Type: Partnership · Technology: Nuclear · Country: United States · Announced: 2026-06-17

Constellation filed license renewal applications with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on June 17, 2026, for the Ginna Clean Energy Center and on March 25, 2026, for Nine Mile Point Unit 1 to extend their operations to 2049. The Ginna plant, a 576 MW single-unit reactor in Ontario, New York, achieved a 99.7% capacity factor in 2025 with 5,035,000 MWh of net generation, while Nine Mile Point Unit 1, a 609 MW reactor in Oswego, New York, recorded a 95.6% capacity factor with 13,965,000 MWh generated. Constellation acquired the Ginna plant in 2003 for $401 million from Rochester Gas & Electric Corp. (RG&E) and purchased the Nine Mile Point facility in 2000 for $1.04 billion from Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., NYSEG, RG&E, and Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. The license renewals, if approved, would extend the operating licenses of both units by 20 years, aligning with New York State’s Zero Emissions Credit (ZEC) program which aims to deliver $50 billion in ratepayer savings by 2050 and preserve 14,000 local jobs. The NRC’s review will assess maintenance plans, plant equipment, and safety systems for both reactors, with Nine Mile Point Unit 2 currently licensed to operate until 2046.
