Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners divests 50% stake in Coalburn 1 BESS to AXA IM Alts and secures 15-year capacity market contract with SSE

Type: Investment · Technology: Storage · Country: United Kingdom · Capacity: 500 MW · Announced: 2026-08-12

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) completed a strategic divestment of a 50% stake in the 500 MW/1 GWh Coalburn 1 battery energy storage system (BESS) to AXA IM Alts in April 2025, reducing its capital exposure while retaining operational control. The project, located at a former coal mining site in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, near Glasgow, entered commercial operations on August 12, 2026, marking Europe’s largest operational BESS. CIP secured a 15-year capacity market contract covering 300 MW of power output with SSE, alongside a 10-year optimization agreement and a seven-year contract for 75 MW, ensuring long-term revenue stability. The BESS was developed in partnership with Alcemi, which began construction in November 2023, while independent renewables company RES was appointed to manage the site in July 2025. Battery technology provider e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, supplied the system for Coalburn 1 and two additional 1 GWh projects in Scotland—Coalburn 2 and Devilla—all designed as transmission-connected assets.
