Cuerva and Alto Infrastructure form partnership to develop Andalucía's first large-scale AI data center SP01 in Escúzar, Granada

Type: Partnership · Technology: Data Center · Country: Spain · Capacity: 100 MW · Announced: 2026-06-25

Cuerva and Alto Infrastructure (formerly Sierra DC) announced a strategic partnership to develop the SP01 data center in the CITAI industrial and innovation hub in Escúzar, Granada, marking Andalucía's first large-scale AI-focused data center. The project, with an initial infrastructure investment of $700 million, will require up to 100 MW of redundant electrical capacity, supplied entirely from renewable sources, and is designed for high-density AI computing workloads including model training and advanced computing. Alto Infrastructure selected Escúzar for its favorable climate for liquid cooling systems, available land, and proximity to the University of Granada's tech ecosystem, which includes over 2,000 professionals and 35 companies. Cuerva, with over 85 years of experience in energy infrastructure, will provide the electrical supply and grid infrastructure, including upgrades to the Escúzar 132/66/20 kV substation and construction of a new 220/132 kV substation connected to Red Eléctrica de España (REE) to ensure operational redundancy. The first operational phase is scheduled to launch in June 2027, with additional capacity added through 2028 as remaining facilities come online. The total project investment could exceed $3 billion, including server and GPU deployments by future tenants.
