Ecobank issues $450 million Nature Bond to finance sustainable agriculture and water infrastructure across Africa
Type: Financing · Technology: Agriculture · Country: Africa · Value: $450M · Announced: 2026-06-05
Pan-African banking group Ecobank Transnational Incorporated launched a $450 million Nature Bond—the world’s first ICMA-aligned Nature Bond issued by a commercial bank—aimed at financing sustainable agriculture and water infrastructure projects across 24 African markets. The bond proceeds will support smallholder farmers adopting sustainable practices, agri-processors with verified deforestation-free supply chains, and water infrastructure projects protecting freshwater ecosystems, with 81% of eligible lending allocated to countries where agricultural land-use change drives biodiversity loss. Ecobank structured the bond to link international capital to eligible lending for sustainable agriculture and water systems, targeting biodiversity-priority countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. The issuance attracted over $1.36 billion in orders, enabling Ecobank to increase the bond size by $100 million and tighten pricing by 50 basis points, with commitments from both international and African investors. Rachael Antwi, Group Head of Sustainability and ESRM at Ecobank, emphasized that the bond reflects a practical approach to scaling nature finance in Africa by connecting capital to real-economy activities with measurable environmental outcomes.
