Eku Energy acquires the 400 MW Dion battery energy storage system project in Germany

Type: Acquisition · Technology: Storage · Country: Germany · Capacity: 400 MW · Announced: 2026-06-30

Eku Energy acquired the 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Dion battery energy storage system project from NION. The BESS is located in Lamspringe, Lower Saxony, Germany, and will connect directly to the transmission grid to provide black‑start capability. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2029, and the project will be developed to Ready‑to‑Build status under a Development Services Agreement with NION. The acquisition gives Eku Energy its first foothold in the German market, expanding its portfolio that already includes more than 25 GWh of battery storage across five other countries. Eku Energy will retain the asset in its long‑term portfolio and will work with technology partner Fluence on lithium‑iron‑phosphate batteries while seeking additional German partnerships for off‑take and commercialisation. Eku Energy’s ownership structure includes British Columbia Investment Management Corporation and a Macquarie Asset Management‑run fund, which support its global expansion.
