Encomara and Aurora Energy Services secure ABS design approval for Squid floating wind installation technology
Type: Partnership · Technology: Offshore Wind · Country: United Kingdom · Announced: 2026-06-17
Encomara and Aurora Energy Services (AES) achieved ABS product design assessment (PDA) for their Squid system, a patented floating offshore wind turbine installation technology. The Squid system integrates pre-installed mooring lines and electrical connections into a single subsea unit, enabling rapid 'plug & play' installation of floating offshore wind turbines. Modelling studies, supported by Scottish Enterprise and key developers, estimate that Squid could halve installation time compared to traditional methods, potentially saving developers £1 billion per GW. ABS completed a detailed review of the Squid system against class and industry requirements for floating offshore wind applications, following its Approval in Principle (AIP) certification received in November 2025. Onshore demonstrations are scheduled for July 2026 at AES's facility in Huntly, Scotland, with inshore wet testing and customer demonstrations planned for August 2026 at Ardersier.
