Energy Dome and Google sign bilateral commercial agreement for 23 MW / 200 MWh CO2 Battery project in Ireland

Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Ireland · Capacity: 23 MW · Announced: 2026-06-23

Energy Dome and Google have signed a bilateral commercial agreement for a 23 MW / 200 MWh CO2 Battery long-duration energy storage project in County Offaly, Ireland. Energy Dome will develop, own, and operate the project, which utilizes its CO2 Battery technology to store electricity by compressing carbon dioxide and generating power by expanding the gas through a turbine. The project is located near Rhode on a former peat-fired power plant site, supporting grid flexibility and reducing congestion in an area with material wind and solar generation. The site has secured land rights, planning approval, and grid connection, and has been awarded a 10-year capacity contract by Irish transmission system operator EirGrid. Commercial operations are expected in 2028, with Energy Dome planning to add a second 200 MWh unit to establish a long-duration storage hub in the Irish Midlands.
