Energy Dome and SEC partner to develop Victoria’s first 10-hour CO2 Battery storage project in Latrobe Valley
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Australia · Capacity: 20 MW · Announced: 2026-07-10
Energy Dome and SEC, a state-owned renewable energy company, formed a partnership to develop Victoria’s first 10-hour long-duration energy storage project using Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery technology. The 20 MW/200 MWh project will be located at SEC’s new Innovation Precinct in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, leveraging existing substations and transmission infrastructure to minimize new build requirements. The CO2 Battery delivers mechanical inertia and grid services, reinforcing system strength as coal and gas generators retire, while avoiding lithium and critical mineral supply-chain exposure. The project aligns with Victoria’s 2030 clean energy targets and will create local jobs by utilizing the region’s industrial workforce skills in steel fabrication and rotating equipment. The partnership also establishes Melbourne as Energy Dome’s Asia-Pacific headquarters, with Claudio Spadacini, Energy Dome’s CEO, emphasizing the technology’s role in providing firm, dispatchable capacity for around-the-clock power.
