Enervest acquires 300 MW Northern Border Battery project in New South Wales

Type: Acquisition · Technology: Storage · Country: Australia · Capacity: 300 MW · Announced: 2026-05-20

Enervest, an Australian renewable energy storage and commercial solar developer, acquired the 300 MW Northern Border Battery project in northern New South Wales from an anonymous Sydney-based developer. The project, located near Bonshaw in the NSW Northern Tablelands region close to the Queensland border, will connect to the grid via the Dumaresq substation, a critical node in the Queensland to NSW interconnector. Enervest plans to retain the project on its balance sheet under its own-and-operate model, marking a strategic shift from its previous focus on third-party-owned projects. The battery is positioned to play a key role in integrating renewable and traditional energy sources into the National Electricity Market (NEM) as coal generators retire, with Eraring—the largest coal-fired power station in Australia—scheduled to close in April 2029. Financial close is targeted for late 2027, with construction expected to commence in early 2028.
