Equinix opened its MD5 data center in Alcobendas, Madrid, with a €460 million ($534 million) investment, adding 4,400 square meters of colocation space to its existing Madrid campus. The facility, part of Equinix’s IBX network, features waterless cooling technology to support AI workloads without water consumption, aligning with sustainable infrastructure goals. The project was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, and other regional officials, underscoring the region’s ambition to become Southern Europe’s leading digital hub. Equinix now operates 14 data centers in Madrid and 15 under construction, with a total capacity exceeding 3,100 MW, competing directly with established European markets like Frankfurt and Paris. The investment reinforces Madrid’s position as a critical interconnection hub, supported by local government incentives for data center development in commercial and industrial zones.
