Equinix signs partnership with A2A to export waste heat from its Milan data centers to the city district heating network

Type: Partnership · Technology: Data Center · Country: Italy · Capacity: 72 MW · Announced: 2026-07-10

Equinix and A2A signed a partnership agreement to export waste heat from Equinix’s data centre campus in Settimo Milanese to A2A’s district‑heating network in Milan. The scheme will channel up to 72 MW of thermal power through four large‑scale heat pumps and two 6,000‑cubic‑metre thermal storage units. A2A estimates the system will recover about 225 GWh of heat annually, enough to supply more than 21,000 residential units. The project supports Milan’s climate goals by cutting roughly 345,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and increasing the district‑heating network’s output by 20 %. Equinix will design, build and operate the heat‑export infrastructure while A2A will own the energy centre and distribute the heat to the urban grid. No financial terms were disclosed, and the agreement was announced on 10 July 2026.
