Ericsson to supply 5G RAN and Core for ICE's 5G network deployment in Costa Rica

Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Telecom · Country: Costa Rica · Value: $220M · Announced: 2026-08-11

Ericsson secured a $220 million contract in May 2026 to serve as the main network supplier for Costa Rica's state-owned telecom operator, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), deploying its 5G RAN and 5G Core infrastructure. The agreement includes Ericsson's dual-mode 5G Core, 4G and 5G RAN solutions, and the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) for network management and automation. ICE, operating under its retail brand Kölbi, will implement 5G Standalone (5G SA) and LTE radio nodes alongside a comprehensive 5G Core solution. The partnership enables advanced use cases such as network slicing, cybersecurity enhancements, and AI-powered network optimization through Ericsson's Anomal Optimization rApps. The phased 5G rollout is expected to go live within 12 months, marking a material upgrade to Costa Rica's connectivity infrastructure.
