ESS Tech partners with Alsym Energy to introduce sodium-ion battery storage for data centers and commercial users
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: United States · Announced: 2026-07-09
ESS Tech, an Oregon-based energy storage provider, partnered with Alsym Energy to introduce its new Bridge BESS, a modular sodium-ion battery system designed for data centers and commercial infrastructure. The Bridge BESS features 1.2 MWh building blocks with sodium-ion cells sourced from Alsym Energy, enabling short- to medium-duration energy storage from one to 16 hours. ESS Tech reported nearly $1 billion in demand for sodium-ion technology since announcing the partnership in April 2026, driven by AI workloads reshaping data center energy storage needs. The system is engineered as plug-and-play units in 10-foot containers, stackable to deliver 4.8 MWh in a 20-foot footprint, with air-cooled operation from -40°C to 50°C. The sodium-ion chemistry reduces thermal runaway risks and reliance on critical minerals, addressing geopolitical sourcing concerns for commercial users.
