European Commission drops foreign subsidies probe into Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power’s financing for Dukovany nuclear power plant project in Czech Republic

Type: Financing · Technology: Nuclear · Country: Czech Republic · Announced: 2026-06-08

The European Commission notified Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) that it will not initiate an in-depth investigation under the EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation regarding the financing for the Dukovany nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic. The Dukovany project, a 4,000 MW nuclear power plant, is a key component of the Czech Republic's energy strategy to replace aging reactors and enhance energy security. KHNP, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), has been involved in discussions with Czech authorities to finalize financing and construction agreements for the project. The European Commission's decision removes a regulatory hurdle that could have delayed or altered the project's financing structure, which includes potential subsidies from the Korean government. The project is expected to commence construction in 2027, with commercial operation targeted for the early 2030s.
