Fonterra signs long-term virtual PPA with NZ Clean Energy for 129 MW Darfield solar-plus-storage project in New Zealand

Type: Ppa · Technology: Hybrid · Country: New Zealand · Announced: 2026-06-17

Fonterra, New Zealand's largest dairy cooperative, signed a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with NZ Clean Energy (NZCE) to purchase electricity generated by the Darfield solar-plus-storage project in Canterbury. The 129 MW hybrid project combines solar PV generation with battery storage, marking one of the largest renewable energy initiatives in New Zealand's dairy sector. Fonterra will use the clean energy to power its operations, reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with New Zealand's renewable energy targets. NZCE, backed by Foresight Group, will develop and operate the project, which is expected to enhance grid stability in the Canterbury region. The agreement underscores Fonterra's commitment to sustainability and its transition toward 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
