Fraunhofer CSP partners with Exxosqel GmbH to develop ultra‑thin glass photovoltaic modules

Fraunhofer CSP and Exxosqel GmbH announced a partnership to co‑develop a demonstrator solar module that uses 1 mm‑thick front and rear glass panes measuring 300 mm × 200 mm. The module incorporates standard encapsulant materials and nine‑busbar bifacial PERC M6 cells, each delivering approximately 1.58 W, and is fabricated on a conventional photovoltaic laminator with adjusted temperature and pressure settings. Laboratory tests reported that the special coating raises the fracture strength of 1 mm glass from 184 MPa to over 1,300 MPa, enabling up to a 40 % weight reduction and lower material, energy, and carbon footprints. The technology is positioned for building‑integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and other lightweight solar applications, potentially lowering module manufacturing costs and transport expenses.
