Frontier Power Energy Holdings acquires two long-duration energy storage projects from Apatura Energy in the UK

Type: Acquisition · Technology: Storage · Country: United Kingdom · Capacity: 350 MW · Announced: 2026-06-16

Frontier Power Energy Holdings, a UK-based platform established by Frontier Power in partnership with affiliates of Cerberus Capital Management, acquired the rights to two long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects—Ayr (200 MW / 1,600 MWh) and Busby (150 MW / 1,200 MWh)—from Apatura Energy. The combined 350 MW / 2.8 GWh capacity expands Frontier’s UK development pipeline to approximately 2.6 GW / 20 GWh. Both projects will deploy Eos Energy Enterprises’ Z3 long-duration battery technology under a pre-existing framework agreement between Frontier and Eos. The Ayr and Busby projects have received Gate 2 notifications under National Grid ESO’s Grid Connections Reform process and are targeting participation in Ofgem’s proposed Cap and Floor regime. Giles Hanglin, CEO of Apatura, emphasized the strategic importance of long-duration storage for energy security and grid resilience, while Humza Malik, CEO of Frontier Power, highlighted the UK’s growing opportunities for LDES deployment. The transaction marks a material step in Frontier’s portfolio expansion, with Apatura remaining involved in the projects’ ongoing development.
