Fundação Nacional dos Povos Indígenas partners with solar irrigation system to support agricultural production for Tupinambá community in Bahia

Type: Partnership · Technology: Solar · Country: Brazil · Announced: 2026-05-05

The Fundação Nacional dos Povos Indígenas (Funai) partnered with the Tupinambá indigenous community in southern Bahia to implement a solar-powered irrigation system for agricultural production. The initiative replaces diesel-powered water pumping, eliminating fossil fuel dependence and reducing operational costs while enabling year-round cultivation of cacao and banana crops. The solar photovoltaic system powers continuous water pumping even during dry periods or in areas with limited grid access, directly supporting food security for dozens of indigenous families. By integrating clean energy solutions into traditional agricultural practices, the project enhances the community's autonomy and aligns with sustainable development goals tailored to local cultural needs. The initiative demonstrates the role of solar energy as a driver of rural development in high-sunlight regions.
