Gerdau acquires Copel's stake in Dona Francisca hydropower plant, gaining control of the 125 MW UHE Dona Francisca
Type: Acquisition · Technology: Hydro · Country: Brazil · Capacity: 125 MW · Announced: 2026-06-16
Gerdau finalized the acquisition of Copel's stake in Dona Francisca Energética (Dfesa), the consortium operator of the 125 MW UHE Dona Francisca hydropower plant located on the Jacuí River between Agudo and Nova Palma in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The transaction transfers control of the hydroelectric facility to Gerdau, which now holds the majority ownership in the project's operating consortium. The 125 MW capacity plant has been a key renewable energy asset in Copel's portfolio, contributing to Brazil's hydro-dominated electricity matrix. The deal aligns with Gerdau's strategy to expand its energy self-sufficiency and reduce operational costs through captive renewable generation. No financial terms were disclosed in the announcement, and the acquisition was completed following the signing of the share purchase agreement between the parties.
