Google and Voltus sign 100 MW capacity deal for PJM Interconnection region

Type: Ppa · Technology: Storage · Country: United States · Capacity: 100 MW · Announced: 2026-06-03

Google and demand response provider Voltus signed the first large-scale 'Bring Your Own Capacity' (BYOC) agreement, assembling up to 100 MW of capacity from batteries, smart thermostats, and other distributed energy resources (DER) across the PJM Interconnection region. The three-year agreement targets capacity rather than energy, addressing interconnection bottlenecks for hyperscalers by aggregating existing DERs that can earn capacity value in PJM markets. Google framed the deal as part of a broader effort to expand tools for supporting future infrastructure growth, with Michael Terrell, Google’s head of advanced energy, stating the company is 'excited to add this new solution to a growing toolkit.' The arrangement is intended as a broader capacity strategy rather than a project-specific power supply agreement, with no tie to a specific campus or expansion project. Former DOE Loan Programs Office Director Jigar Shah compared the arrangement to Google’s early leadership in virtual power purchase agreements for solar and wind farms a decade ago, noting Google is providing a long-term offtake to secure demand flexibility assets like batteries.
