Google signs VPPA for 1.6 GW solar + 2 GWh storage project in Arkansas

Type: Ppa · Technology: Solar, Storage · Country: United States · Capacity: 1.6 GW · Announced: 2026-07-15

Google has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) to acquire 100% of the initial power generation from the Steel River Energy Center in Arkansas. This project, developed by Cypress Creek Energy, marks the largest solar-plus-storage project to break ground in the United States, initially featuring 1.6 GW of solar power and 2 GWh of battery energy storage. Upon full completion, the project is planned to scale up to 2.5 GW of solar PV and 2.9 GWh of energy storage. The VPPA will allow Google to pay a fixed price for the clean energy output, helping to offset its grid-based emissions, particularly as its data center energy needs grow due to AI workloads. First Solar will supply the PV modules, while LG will manufacture the battery systems for the project, with structural steel sourced domestically within Arkansas.
