Chinese group Gotion High-Tech is finalizing the commissioning of Africa's first battery gigafactory in Morocco's Kenitra Atlantic Free Zone, a project formalized through a memorandum of understanding in 2023 with an estimated investment cost of MAD 65 billion (almost $7 billion). The plant, built by Gotion Power Morocco, is expected to begin production by the end of the summer, utilizing cathode-to-cell technology with LFP chemistry. The African Development Bank supported the project with a €100 million loan and plans to mobilize up to an additional €141 million from other financial partners. The initial industrial phase anticipates a production capacity of 10 GWh per year, with a long-term goal of 100 GWh, strategically positioning Morocco for exports to Europe and meeting regional electric mobility demand.
