Government of Minas Gerais partners with Cemig to deploy solar energy across 6,700 public buildings via subscription model

Type: Partnership · Technology: Solar · Country: Brazil · Announced: 2026-07-06

The Government of Minas Gerais formalized a partnership with Cemig to expand solar energy adoption across 6,700 public buildings through a subscription-based solar model, targeting annual electricity cost savings of R$ 34 million. The initiative, coordinated by the State Planning and Management Secretariat (Seplag), will cover administrative offices, schools, health units, police stations, and other public facilities across all 853 municipalities in Minas Gerais. The Cemig SIM subsidiary will supply solar-generated energy via a shared generation model, where credits from photovoltaic plants are injected into Cemig’s distribution network and offset against the electricity bills of participating public buildings. The project aligns with the state’s climate action plan, aiming to reduce over 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to planting more than 82,000 adult trees. Seplag highlighted that the partnership was selected after technical studies, market benchmarking, and procurement modeling, with the agreement reinforcing the state’s commitment to decarbonization goals. Cemig’s president, Alexandre Ramos, emphasized the initiative’s role in advancing the state’s participation in the Race to Zero campaign, which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
