Greenfield partners with Renewable Power Capital to develop the 99.9 MW Ironbridge battery storage project in Shropshire
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: United Kingdom · Capacity: 99.9 MW · Announced: 2026-06-30
Greenfield and Renewable Power Capital have formed a partnership to develop the Ironbridge battery energy storage system, a 99.9 MW facility in Shropshire, England. The project will connect to the distribution network via the former Ironbridge Power Station substation located about 1.2 km from the site. The battery system is designed to store electricity for up to two hours, supplying power equivalent to roughly 160,000 homes and delivering an estimated 1.2 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided over its lifetime. The partnership adds to a combined BESS portfolio of more than 452 MW across seven UK projects, enhancing grid flexibility as renewable generation expands. DWD acted as adviser on the planning application, and the scheme includes transformers, inverters, a 132 kV substation and ancillary infrastructure such as a water tank and attenuation pond. Planning permission was granted by Shropshire Council on 30 June 2026, marking a key milestone for the joint venture.
