Helion secures transmission interconnection agreement with Chelan County Public Utility District for Orion fusion power plant
Type: Ppa · Technology: Nuclear · Country: United States · Announced: 2026-06-18
Helion Energy received two critical regulatory licences from the Washington Department of Health for its Orion fusion power plant, marking the first such approvals globally for fusion operations. The company now holds a Radioactive Materials licence and a Radioactive Air Emissions licence, enabling it to proceed with construction and operation in Malaga, Washington. Helion has also secured a transmission interconnection agreement with Chelan County Public Utility District, the first such deal for a fusion power plant, which will allow the facility to connect to the grid. Construction of the Orion assembly building is complete, with earthwork underway for the generator building, positioning the project for commercial deployment. The fusion plant will use a pulsed fusion system with deuterium and helium-3 fuel, designed to directly recover electricity rather than generating steam for turbines.
