Holtec International and EDF Energy form joint venture to develop up to four SMR-300 reactors at Cottam site in the UK
Type: Partnership · Technology: Nuclear · Country: United Kingdom · Capacity: 300 MW · Announced: 2026-06-24
Holtec International and EDF Energy signed Heads of Terms to create a joint venture for up to four SMR‑300 small modular reactors at the former Cottam coal‑power site in Nottinghamshire, UK. The SMR‑300 is a pressurised water reactor delivering about 300 MW of electricity each, and the four‑unit configuration could supply roughly 1.2 GW to the site. The reactors will support a planned 1 GW data‑centre complex slated to start operations by the end of the decade, with the nuclear units expected to be online in the 2030s. The partnership leverages existing grid infrastructure at Cottam and intends to attract foreign direct investment, including potential contracts for nuclear fuel fabrication by Framatome and turbine supply from Arabelle Solutions. Holtec’s move also expands its UK footprint, while EDF seeks to meet the UK government’s target to increase nuclear capacity. The joint venture was announced on 24 June 2026 as part of the companies’ joint proposal submission to the UK regulator.
