The Inter-American Development Bank approved a $204.2 million financing package for Bolivia’s northern Amazon region, comprising a $142.2 million loan, a $60 million parallel loan from the Clean Technology Fund, and a $2 million grant from the Climate Investment Funds. The funds will support the interconnection of the isolated Cobija system with Brazil’s Acre grid and link Guayaramerín and Riberalta with the Rondônia network, as well as modernize distribution networks in those three cities. In addition, the program will install photovoltaic solar plants and battery energy storage systems to replace diesel generators in remote communities of Beni and Pando. The project targets roughly 209,000 residents in Riberalta, Guayaramerín, Cobija and surrounding areas, seeking to lower diesel fuel expenditures and improve electricity reliability. The loan terms include a 23.5‑year amortization with seven years grace at a SOFR‑linked rate for the IDB loan, and a 30‑year term with 8.5 years grace at a fixed 1.33 % rate for the Clean Technology Fund loan. The financing is part of the BID’s Amazonia Forever initiative and the South Connection regional strategy to enhance cross‑border energy integration in South America.
