Iowa state partners with AWS and Cognizant for cloud migration to save $525M over a decade

The State of Iowa announced a cloud migration partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and IT vendor Cognizant to consolidate its IT infrastructure, moving data from dozens of state data centers and thousands of physical servers to AWS. Governor Kim Reynolds stated the migration will save over $525 million over the next decade by shifting from large upfront capital expenditures to scalable cloud services. Cognizant will manage day-to-day IT operations, offering around 200 existing state IT employees continued employment during and after the migration, which begins on August 3, 2026. AWS, which operates multiple US regions including Virginia, California, Ohio, and Oregon, will provide cloud infrastructure despite not having a dedicated region in Iowa. The state has been consolidating its IT since October 2023, with AWS highlighting the initiative as a model for government modernization.
